Great Shearwater Seasonal Occurrence & Geographic Distribution

*Great Shearwater Puffinus gravis

Lower Coast Status: Very rare in summer and fall; three records for the Lower Coast, 17 July 2010, 19 July 2008, 1 October 2004.

TX Status: There are 20 documented records of Great Shearwater for the state. 

Habitat: offshore and pelagic waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

Similar Species: See Cory’s Shearwater.

This map shows the geographic distribution of Great Shearwater sightings on Texas Pelagics (green stars) mostly from South Padre Island mostly, but also includes 1 trip from Port Aransas and 2 trips from Port O’Connor. Sighting coordinates from 25 + Texas Pelagics are unavailable.

Great Shearwaters sightings range from the middle shelf into deep pelagic waters, although the data is limited.
