2016 Texas Pelagics Schedule

Reservations are NOW OPEN! I am excited to announce that we are planning to run 6 trips in 2016. As you may know our 6 trips in 2015 were spectacular. The 2015 highlights included: Manx Shearwater – 1; a record number of Leach’s Storm-Petrels ~ 110; Great Shearwater -1; Sabine’s Gull – 1; Whale Shark -1; Sperm Whale – 1; Mesoplodon Beaked Whale -1; and Pygmy/Dwarf Sperm Whale -1; And if that wasn’t enough we encountered very high numbers for the season of many of the regular pelagic seabirds: Audubon’s Shearwater – 75; Band-rumped Storm-Petrels – 47; Cory’s Shearwaters – 16; Masked Boobies – 18; Sooty Terns – 127; Bridled Terns – 18; Pomarine Jaegers – 25.

The scheduled dates for the all the pelagic trips are firm.

NEW FOR 2016:  I am planning to run one summer trip from Port Aransas in 2016. The last time Pelagic trips were run from Port Aransas was back in 2002 and 2003, so I think it’s about time we tried Port “A” again. The waters off Mustang Island are more interesting on the continental shelf because of the numerous gas production platforms and the fish and birds they can attract.  The only disadvantage is that it is a slightly longer cruise to the shelf edge so I am planning to run a 16 hour trip to ensure we have adequate time in deep Pelagic waters.

FARES: Unfortunately our Charter boat prices have increased significantly over 2015’s rates. I’ve done my best to keep the per person fares reasonable but I’ll need to have more people sign up per trip to do that. To help keep costs down for everyone all of our leaders have agreed to pay at least half fare for all trips this year. It helps with my planning and financial risk to know in advance if the trip will have enough participants to make the trip GO.I often get a lot of people signing up in the last one or two weeks before the trip. I’m really pleased they decided to come but waiting until the last minute puts the trip at risk of being cancelled because I have to let the charter people know at least 2 weeks, or in the case of Port Aransas a month ahead of the trip if we’re going to have enough participants to meet the charter cost. As an incentive to sign up early we offer fare discounts for participants who register and pay early. The earlier you register the more you save!

Early Bird Fare: $20 discount over the regular fare is valid for those who pay their deposits prior to 3 months in advance of the trip date.

Regular Fare: applies to those who pay between 3 months and 1 month in advance of the trip date.

Late Fare: + $20 additional over regular fare applies to payments made less than one month before the trip date.

The table below reflects the “regular” fare applicable for each trip.

REGISTRATION: When you are ready to sign up click ‘Trip Sign-up’. Follow the instructions on the registration forms and mail it in with your payment. I have added a survey for everyone. It might help us to better meet the needs of our participants or even improve our trips.

(*1) The Port A boat has a different policy on sailing when seas are rougher. From South Padre we won’t sail in seas over 5 feet. From Port A their policy is that the Pelagic will sail if their fishing boats are sailing that day, which they stated would happen unless seas were greater than 6 feet.
