South Padre Island – Osprey Fishing Boats

From the Lower Texas Coast the Osprey I is based near the southern tip of South Padre Island and has proved to be an excellent boat for Texas Pelagics.  This seaworthy boat has been used for most of the Texas Pelagics since 2000, 48 trips so far and counting. South Padre Island, while a long way from some parts of Texas, is an good location for Texas Pelagics due to the fact that the edge of the continental shelf  is about only 43 to 49 nautical miles offshore and can be reached in about 4 hours. The shelf edge is the beginning of pelagic waters and is closer to shore here then anywhere else along the Texas Coast.

The Osprey I was extensively renovated in the winter of 2014 and is now even better for Texas Pelagics. I just received these pictures of the newly renovated Osprey which will now be a dedicated Nature Cruise Boat. Rubberized decking has been added to all the outside decks and carpeting in the cabin. One of the best features of the Osprey for pelagic birding is it’s very large and accessible upper deck with seating on the bow and above the stern. This area makes a great viewing platform especially on calmer days and can easily accommodate more than 20 seabirders.

Here is a look at the bow of the newly renovated Osprey. Seating has been added on the upper bow deck and height has been added for safety to the upper deck railing.

Interior cabin: All the bus type seating removed, replaced by padded seats around the perimeter for 47 passengers. A snack bar added at the bow end with a margarita machine I’m told. Small pedestal tables. Certainly a lot more room to move around, but I hope there is enough table space?

2.The upper rear deck is awesome. A lot of room to sit. Nice access from the rear stairway. I think we could easily sit / accommodate 15 or more additional birders up there.

The stern looks great. No more big fish boxes in the way. Larger bench seats have been added and there is a lot more room to move around.
